If you're shopping for a Subaru SUV, you may be wondering whether you should pick up a Subaru Forester or a Subaru Ascent. Both SUVs are very appealing for a number of reasons, so we understand the struggle. That's why we at Subaru of Kennesaw want to highlight the differences between these two models so you can make an informed purchasing decision.

What's the Difference in Size Between the Forester and Ascent?

The most visible difference between these two models is their size. The Subaru Forester is a compact SUV, but the Ascent is a midsize SUV with three rows of seats. It's a full 14.7 inches longer than the Forester and 4.5 inches wider. However, both SUVs share the 8.7 inches of ground clearance, allowing you to safely drive over rough terrain without much concern.

On the inside, the Forester only has room for five. This means that, if you need to sit up to eight people in your car, the Ascent is the way to go. The extra seating also means added passenger volume. The Forester has up to 111.9 cubic feet of space for your passengers to stretch out in, while the Ascent expands this to 153.5 cubic feet.

If you need cargo space for your trips out of Kennesaw, you may be surprised to learn that both SUVs will do nicely. The Forester has up to 74.3 cubic feet with all the seats lowered, and the Subaru Ascent has up to 86.5 cubic feet, losing only half a cubic foot with the moonroof.

Which Model Should I Get for the Best Performance?

While both the Forester and the Ascent offer capable powertrains, there's a clear winner when comparing the two. The Forester comes with a 2.5-liter BOXER® engine which generates 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque. While this is by no means bad, it pales in comparison to the Ascent's turbocharged 2.4-liter engine, which produces 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque.

The difference in power can be felt on the highway, as it will take you a couple fewer seconds to get up to speed in the Subaru Ascent. You'll also appreciate the extra power if you need to tow anything in Kennesaw. The Forester has a reasonable towing capacity of 1,500 pounds, but the Ascent can tow up to 5,000 pounds when properly equipped.

Which SUV Gets Better Mileage Around Marietta?

As you might have guessed, the difference in power does have a cost. While the Forester drives a respectable 33 mpg on the highway and 26 mpg in the city, the base Ascent's fuel economy drops to 27 mpg on the highway and 21 mpg in the city. While this might seem like quite a difference, if you compare the Subaru Ascent to other SUVs in its class, it's actually above average. You'll still want to choose the Forester if you're concerned about fuel economy.

Are There Any Features Exclusive to One Model?

These SUVs share many of their features, ensuring you don't have to sacrifice comfort and convenience for a smaller model. You get much the same technology, comfort and safety features in both models. However, there are a few exceptions.

The Ascent has ventilated front seats and pinch-protection for its automatic-up/down front windows available, while the Forester lacks these. You'll also find that the Forester's available power rear gate and USB ports for the rear seats are standard in the Ascent.

Finally, it's worth noting that the Forester has a standard automatic climate control system and an available dual-zone climate control system. However, the Ascent comes with a tri-zone climate control system from the start, offering much more flexibility.

Don't hesitate to schedule a test drive with either of these fantastic models at Subaru of Kennesaw. We'll be happy to answer any further questions you have and show you more of these terrific features.
